Welsh Dragons O40 2 Bristol & West O40 0 (Winterbourne Academy, Bristol, Sun Feb 26th)

The Welsh Dragons Masters squad faced a strong Bristol & West side (containing several players with representative honours) in their first competitive game of 2012, ahead of a busy year which culminates in the first FIH recognised Masters World Cup competition for the O40 age group.

The Dragons started the stronger of the two sides, with strong running up front from Simon Wilson and Gwent’s Richard Eaton, and good interplay from Neil Couston and Simon Lloyd in midfield.
The opening goal came from a powerful strike into the "D" from Lloyd, deflected by Couston past the Bristol keeper, who had made a number of fine saves up to that point.
Bristol & West responded strongly, creating a number of chances particularly through some fine forward play from Andy Higginson, but were kept at bay through a solid defensive performance from the Welsh Dragons back line, marshalled by Bath City’s Simon Sparkes.
The Dragons were unlucky to go in only one goal ahead – Lloyd scoring a second from close range only to be disallowed by the umpire for an infringement which seemed to occur after the ball had crossed the line.
Following the interval The Dragons picked up the pace of the game and created a number of chances, with Alex Robins and James Greenhalgh showing high energy and creativity on their competitive debuts. A second goal duly arrived through a fine short corner strike from Whitchurch’s John Smith.
As The Dragons continued to press in search of further goals, Bristol & West had a number of opportunities on the counter-attack, but were repelled by the back line of Colin Mazzone, Barry Dunn and Paul Thomas, with keeper Adrian Hibbert making two fine saves from short corners.
The game finished 2-0 to The Dragons – with good debut performances from a number of players, including goalkeeper Steve Edge and forward Neil Stokes.
Richard Eaton received the Man of the Match award as nominated by the opposition.
